This course introduces Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), focusing on how specialized tools and strategies support individuals who cannot rely on natural speech. It details the Participation Model, a framework used by multidisciplinary teams to evaluate an individual's unique communication needs, social networks, and environmental barriers. The course emphasize that AAC assessment is a dynamic process that must account for a person's life experiences, cultural background, and evolving capabilities. By examining both aided and unaided systems, the text illustrates how technology—ranging from simple picture boards to advanced eye-tracking computers—enables social closeness, information transfer, and autonomy. Ultimately, the course advocate for the fundamental right to communicate, asserting that no individual should be excluded from AAC services regardless of the severity of their disability.
