The objective of this module is to familiarize students with the basic concepts of telecommunications networks.
Students will understand the concepts of norms and standards, the characteristics and evaluation criteria of digital transmissions, and how to protect these digital transmissions from errors caused mainly by the types of channels used. Finally, examples of wired, wireless, and mobile telecommunications networks will be presented.

This course has been written for third-year undergraduate students in Telecommunications programs at universities and engineering schools in Algeria. It aligns with the official curriculum for the "Science and Technology" domain, specifically on transmission media.
The document brings together the essential concepts required to understand a key component of transmission systems: the medium that carries information. It presents the characteristics of transmission media, the different types, and their areas of application.
Understanding these transmission media is absolutely essential for students in telecommunications.
This course is composed of five chapters. The first chapter covers the main characteristics of transmission media, such as: bandwidth, attenuation, noise sensitivity, characteristic impedance, reflection coefficient, and standing wave ratio.
Subsequent sections describe the parameters of certain electrical conductors, including coaxial cables and twisted pairs. One full chapter is dedicated to optical fibers, discussing their advantages and fields of application.
General information on microwave links, key frequency bands, and satellite communication is covered in the third chapter.
The final chapter is structured to gradually introduce the phenomenon of light beam propagation in free space — from an overview of spectra, infrared sources, and visible light, to a discussion of various application domains.
Additionally, several didactic or bibliographic inserts highlight everyday applications of electromagnetic wave propagation (such as data transmission via Ethernet cables, microwave applications, and fiber-optic communication).
